Dinosaur Designs is the ultimate Australian design brand. Its signature style is instantly recognizable – an eclectic blend of chunky, tactile shapes, combined with the most brilliant, intuitive sense of colour. Dinosaur Designs has founded its business in 1985 and for over 30 years it has now become a successful manufacturing business that sells a vast range of jewelry and homeware designs to retailers around the world.
All of the collections of Dinosaur Designs start in the sketchbooks. Stephen Ormandy and Louise Olsen, designers of the company discuss stories and themes first. And then they start to sketch ideas. It sometimes takes 6 months from start to finish, and they move in to production. On average, it is probably about seven pairs of hands, but it depends on the piece. Designers make the original piece in clay, which is then prototyped in resin, which then needs find-tuning. Lastly they make a mould and cast it before it is hand sanded and hand finished.
Dinosaur Designs grew very naturally, very organically for them. It’s a philosophy of colour and form. Every piece they make is crafted by hand in Australia, giving each piece the slight differences that make it unique.
Their aesthetic has refined and evolved over the years. The designers love the contrast in textures that’s created by adding elements of silver, brass and glass to each collection and they are always asking ‘what’s next?’ as they get excited by the creative process and the journey it takes you on.
