Kang Hee Jung graduated with both a BFA in Craft Art and a MFA in Wood Painting in Sook Myung Women’s University in Seoul. She has had 3 solo exhibitions and her works have been in more than 15 group exhibitions internationally, such as France and China.
She is currently working on making craft objects and up-cycling furniture to be used in everyday life. She discovers materials from our surroundings and is recently interested in bringing back abandoned objects to us. Kang breaks up an outdated object, deriving its value and beauty to re-create it as a brand-new object and a furniture piece suitable for contemporary lifestyle.
Kang focuses on Ottchil, which is Korean lacquer art. She finds that applying lacquer is a consecutive work of repetition. Repetitive labor usually makes one bored, but Ottchil does not. Rather, Kang feels anxious when she works on Ottchil as it constantly provides her with new experiences. Ottchil work is very delicate and particular to deal with, which fascinates her to continue on with her works.
